Give yourself a fighting chance

As our streets become less safe, most women (and men for that matter) – don’t know how to defend themselves if attacked.

Having spent years teaching Self Defence short courses, one thing has always been evident.  Even if the student understands the Self Defence concepts and practises the moves at home (unfortunately most don't), what is the one thing that they lack?

Most would answer 'Strength'.  To a certain extent this is true, but if you've taken one of our self defence classes, you would know that they're already designed for those who are inevitably going to be weaker than their attacker.

The real answer is ENDURANCE.  Most participants lack endurance.  They learn the concepts and maneuvers, but can't keep them up.

A classic example is when we've shown students how to defend themselves if they end up on the ground - mostly by kicking - but after a couple of minutes, they give up, puffed out.  In class, you're safe - but in reality?

How many rapists are going to give you a few minutes to catch your breath when you're too tired to keep kicking?  Zero.  And sadly, this factor is often why they fall victim.

They can't fight for as long as it takes for the attacker to give up, or for someone to notice you're in trouble.

Now there are plenty of fitness classes out there, but how many are going to be of much use to you if you're attacked?  Maybe if you can run away you can out run them - but it's unlikely.
Good Self Defence skill is also about coping with instant fear and shock. If you, through fear are frozen into a statue then the best techniques can be of little use. When fear is compounded with a lack of general fitness you are almost certain to end up on the losing side.

You should be prepared in all aspects to defend yourself and being prepared is being well practised.  The regular Self Defence class training is designed to provide you with the skills and confidence to protect yourself should the unthinkable happen.

So it makes sense to learn and practice life saving Self Defence skills and get fit while you're at it.
